THE GREENLINE PROJECT – Melbourne, Australia

Our Wonderful Green Future involves us retrofitting our current cities of concrete & cars with new, vibrant, green and livable spaces. This will require a mix of small, local, initiatives, along with grand plans and big projects like the THE GREENLINE.

The Greenline Project aims to reposition Melbourne’s Yarra River (Birrarung) as the focal point of Melbourne’s culture, economy and liveability.

Through the Greenline Project, Melbourne Council Proposes to revitalise the river’s north bank, transforming it into an inspiring and rejuvenated public waterfront. A 4-kilometre pathway will connect vibrant riverside destinations, stretching from Birrarung Marr to the Bolte Bridge in Docklands. It will integrate Aboriginal culture and engagement at every stage of the design and delivery process.

The master plan develops the Greenline Project as a series of interconnected spaces along the north bank of the Yarra River. Introducing the idea of a ‘woven line’ to guide the big-picture changes and themes that establish the ecological, cultural, connectivity and place-based aspirations of the project.

This is just the sort of big project every city needs to embark on, with an eye on social justice, climate change, water quality and livability. And it’s good to see many other cities are. In 2019, London signed a pledge to become the first National Park City, with an ambitious target to turn 50% of its urban spaces green by 2050, as part of a new drive to convince cities and their residents to be greener, healthier, and wilder. There is the Foresta Mi plan in Milan to plant 3 million trees by 2030. Plus one of the most famous avenues in Paris, the Champs-Élysées, is set for a facelift that will see it transformed into a green, pedestrian-friendly space, after Mayor Anne Hidalgo gave the go-ahead for a major renovation project.
