When we hear of Tree Planting Projects on the news it’s mostly likely in relation to some massive project, somewhere far away. A “Great Green Wall,” a “Billion Tree Project,” “Reforest Scotland….” All big projects, with big goals and big financial inputs needed. But in truth anyone can instigate tree planting, it’s not just something “other people” do. We just need to think local.
Planting Trees in our neighborhoods provides so many benefits. From reducing heat in summer, filtering out air pollution, providing wildlife habitat, improving mental health, sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere and much much more. (22 Benefits of Trees) Filling our neighborhoods with trees is one of the best thing we can all do to improve quality of life. But where do we start?
Strong Towns has put together this excellent starter guide which outlines some of the key things to consider. The author, Emma Durand-Wood, draws on her own experience and highlights the main challenges and opportunities.
As the saying goes, “If you don’t take action, who will and when?” That’s why in 2024 I’m following some of the tips in this article and getting involved in Local Tree Planting. How about you?
